Jeep Cherokee 1988 4.0L AW4 automatic: Will not start when it is cold outside unless I jump the starter terminals with a screwdriver. I have had to move the shift lever to neutral for years in order for it to start. Does anyone know how to hotwire it?

By starter terminals, do you mean shorting the starter solenoid?

If so, therein is the problem. Hotwiring is not a good solution for this problem. Solenoids are fairly cheap and easily replaced by a noviced. They tend to fail after 10-15 years of heavy use.
