    Identification

    Within your hips are sacs filled with fluid called bursae. These sacs act as padding for your muscles, tendons and ligaments so that they can move effortlessly over the hip bone.

    Significance

    Bursitis of the hip occurs when the fluid-filled sacs become inflamed. The swelling can last for hours or weeks.

    Symptoms

    Symptoms include sharp pain for a couple of days and then a dull ache as the flare-up continues, according to Family Doctor. Other symptoms include tenderness and warmth at the site of your pain.

    Causes

    This condition is caused by a variety of factors including rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, infection, scoliosis or bone spurs. Other causes include overuse and injury.

    Treatment

    To relieve the inflammation and pain, your doctor may recommend rest. In addition, you may use nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or ice to relieve symptoms. Long term, you may need to exercise or receive steroid shots every couple of months to treat your bursitis.
