The presence of parasites in the body can cause a myriad of unpleasant symptoms. There are over 100 different types of parasitic worms that can live in the human body, as well as other parasitic organisms. Many of these are ingested in the foods we eat.
Identification
A parasite is an organism that must have a host in order to survive. This organism lives on the nutrients from the host, and may cause harm to the host. Parasitic organisms exist in the environment such as food, water, or the air.
Symptoms
Some symptoms of a parasitic infection in the body are fatigue, weight loss, allergies, anemia, constipation, gas, bloating, diarrhea, nervousness and immune dysfunction.
Causes
Parasites most commonly enter the body in food or water. Other causes are sexual contact, the air, through the nose, through the skin or transmitting agents (such as insects).
Prevention/Solution
In attempting to prevent parasitic infestations, it is important to wash all fruits and vegetables, cook meat thoroughly, and drink pure water. Good hygiene habits such as hand washing can reduce the risk of infestation. Be sure to wear shoes outdoors and avoid swimming in rivers, lakes, ponds or public swimming pools.
Considerations
People that suffer from parasitic infestations are generally in ill health. They may be weak, mal-nourished and have depressed immune systems. Parasites rob the body of vital nutrients necessary to maintain a healthy body. If you are concerned about parasitic infestations, contact your doctor.
