  • Adobe Acrobat Reader is one of the most commonly utilized software programs available. It offers the ability to view, read and send "flat," uneditable documents with ease. However, trying to type in Adobe software can be frustrating. While the software is generally designed to be a reader program only, there are a few tricks that can get you typing in those PDF documents.

    A Way Around Adobe

Adobe documents are known as PDF documents. They are "flat" text, meaning that they are uneditable. Think of a PDF as a photo of a document, rather than the original text of a document. But if you need to edit the text within an Adobe PDF document, you can. The trick is that you can't edit the document with the Adobe program. You will need to highlight and copy the text sections you wish to edit to a word processing program, such as Microsoft Word. Once the text is pasted on a new editable document, you can make any necessary changes. When you're finished, and you want to put the text back into the Adobe Acrobat program, you can save or "print the file" as a PDF. Adobe offers this service itself, although it does require the purchase of an upgraded software version from the website. If you don't want to pay for the right to print a document as a PDF, there are some free PDF conversion software available, one of the most popular being doPDF.com. Be warned, however, that these freeware PDF converters often expedience compatibility problems with Adobe Acrobat.

    Within Adobe

If the option to copy and paste into a word processing program is not acceptable to you, there is an option with the Adobe program known as the TouchUp Text Tool. You can access this tool by clicking on Tools; Advanced Editing; TouchUp Text Tool. You can then click within the text on the document you wish to edit. At this point, if the document was originally write-protected, you will be given the option to unembed the text, and then make the desired edits. If write protection was not a part of the original document, a bounding box will appear around any available text and allow you to begin edits. Unfortunately, this option does not always work. Some PDF documents are encrypted to prevent any tampering with the original text.
