  • <h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Termites Don't Like Pine Straw

Pine straw is one of the least-appealing mulches to termites, according to the Louisiana State University Agricultural Center. The University of Missouri Center for Agroforestry reports that pine straw is also uninviting to other home and garden pests, such as slugs and snails, and discourages weed growth. The material can also benefit soil pH levels.

On the Other: Homeowners Must Be Proactive

Using pine straw isn't enough to ensure that termites won't come around. According to the LSU Agricultural Center, excess water buildup, clinging vines and accumulation of mulch and other debris next to the house can attract termites.

    Bottom Line

Pine straw is a good mulching choice as it does not attract termites. Choosing the right mulch is just one factor in deterring the pests, however. Homeowners must also consider water drainage and location of mulch, among other things, when mapping out a landscaping strategy to keep termites away.
