If the antenna connects directly to the television, then the cable signal isn't being sent through the DirecTV receiver, rendering it useless. This means that users who connect their antenna in this fashion cannot make use of DirecTV's channel guide or be able to record any television programs.
On the Other: Clearer Signal
Of course, any device that a cable signal must pass through will dilute the signal somewhat. Therefore, connecting the antenna to the DirecTV receiver first will make the signal slightly less clear. In this case, however, this difference in picture quality is negligible.
Bottom Line
In order for the DirecTV receiver to be useful, it must be connected directly to the antenna. The receiver can then be connected to the TV and DirecTV services can be used.
