Pressure-treated lumber, already permeated with chemicals to make it weather- and bug-resistant, can be further protected by applying an outdoor wood sealer. It is critical that it be applied at the proper time, though. If it is done too early, it can encourage structural and appearance problems.

On the Other: You Don't Want to Do It Too Soon

Because the wood can still be "wet" from the chemical treatment, most experts recommend a minimum of six weeks' drying time after installation before applying a sealer. Applying it too soon can trap moisture in the wood, which encourages rot and fungus growth and could make the surface look bad as trapped moisture tries to seep out of the wood.

    Bottom Line

Construction experts and manufacturers of sealing products agree that treated wood must be thoroughly dry before applying a sealer. It's best to err on the side of caution and wait a week or two after the wood appears dry before applying a sealer. The wood won't be affected and the sealer will work better.
