Nasal steroids are medications that are primarily used to treat inflammation, mucus and swelling in the nose and sinuses that result from allergies.
Background
You spray nasal steroids, also called corticosteroids, directly into your nose. The dose is small, and your body absorbs minimal medication.
Nasal Polyps
According to the MassGeneral Hospital for Children, nasal steroids are very effective in shrinking the size of nasal polyps (non-malignant growths of tissue in the nose).
Sleep Apnea
According to the University of Michigan Department of Pediatrics, nasal steroid sprays improve the symptoms of children who have obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, a disorder that causes the child to stop breathing during sleep.
Side Effects
According to the UC San Diego Medical Center, nasal steroids affect only the local area where they are used and have only minor possible side effects, which may include nosebleed, cough and nasal and throat irritation.
Considerations
According to the UC San Diego, when you use nasal steroids for allergies, you may see an improvement within 24 hours of starting, but maximum relief usually takes two weeks. If you do not see improvement in two weeks or you feel worse, contact your doctor.
