Fibrovan is an herbal supplement that manufacturer Komodo Pharmaceuticals says helps prevent blood clots and treats endometriosis and uterine fibroids. Despite the fact that that they are natural, the ingredients in Fibrovan pose a risk for side effects in some people.
Ingredients
Komodo lists the ingredients of Fibrovan as an enzyme found in fermented soybeans called nattokinase, a chemical found in green tea called EGCG and the antioxidant lycopene.
Types of Side Effects
Side effects of green tea and EGCG include stomach upset and constipation, and large doses of the supplements may cause headaches, nervousness, sleep problems, vomiting, diarrhea, irritability, irregular heartbeat, shaking, heartburn, dizziness and ringing in the ears, RxList reports. Some patients suffer from easy bleeding or bruising while taking nattokinase.
Drug Interactions
When used with medications that thin your blood such as warfarin or aspirin, nattokinase poses a risk for prolonged or uncontrollable bleeding following an injury or surgery, RxList warns. Using chemicals derived from green tea may cause an increase in side effects when taken with stimulant medications such as amphetatmines.
Risks
Green tea extract has the potential to cause liver damage, RxList warns. Some patients develop severe allergic reactions to nattokinase, which cause chest pain, shortness of breath, hives and swelling of the face and extremities.
Considerations
If you are pregnant, nursing or have a history of heart or liver disease, anemia, high blood pressure, glaucoma or anxiety disorders, it may not be safe for you to take Fibrovan due to its ingredients, RxList cautions. Because it is an herbal supplement, the FDA has not evaluated Fibrovan for effectiveness or safety.
