Colazal is a brand name for the generic drug balsalazide. Colazal works by inhibiting the effects of chemicals that cause bowel inflammation. It is also used in the treatment of ulcerative colitis.
Identification
Colazal is a gastrointestinal agent that belongs to the chemical class salicylate (non-aspirin). It is available in capsule form for use by patients older than five years of age.
Function
The active ingredient in Colazal is mesalamine, which acts directly on the walls off the colon. Consequently, Colazal's side effects are not as severe as those of similar drugs.
Kidney Damage
According to drugs.com, mesalamine may cause damage to the kidney, but there are no reports that Colazal causes kidney damage.
Side Effects
Common side effects of Colazal include nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain, headache and infection of the respiratory tract.
Dosage
According to drugs.com, the recommended dosage for adults is three capsules (750mg) three times a day. The recommended treatment duration is eight weeks.
Considerations
People who suffer from kidney disease or pyloric stenosis, as well as those undergoing antibiotic treatment should consult their doctor about taking Colazal.
