A nursing degree is necessary to become a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM). A nursing degree is not required to become a Certified Midwife (CM) through the American College of Nurse-Midwives, although significant training is necessary. The term "lay midwife" refers to one who practices midwifery, but does not have formal certification, and may or may not have a nursing degree.
