  • Stool can be a guide to what is happening in the human body, giving an insight into internal problems and illnesses.

    Types

Stool provides information through its color, consistency and texture, which can be studied to derive more understanding of what is occurring internally.

    Digestion

Stool begins with a green color before turning yellow in the digestive tract, where it is affected by bacteria that turn it its common brown color. If a stool is yellow it is often a sign of it passing through the digestive tract too quickly.

    The Liver

The color of stool is affected by the liver, which excretes bile salts that color it brown. A yellow or silvery white stool is often a sign of a blocked liver that does not produce enough bile or bile salts.

    Infection

The liver is vital in the production of stool. Consequently, an infected liver can produce a yellow-colored stool if it is affected by any of the various forms of hepatitis.

    Organs

A yellow- or clay-colored stool can also be the result of a complication with the biliary system, which drains the gallbladder, liver and pancreas.
