Coconut oil provides an excellent source of nutrition for hair and performs as a natural moisturizer. If you massage the coconut oil into the scalp, you prevent lice and decrease the onset of dry scalp. For the skin, coconut oil helps heal bruises more quickly because the oil repairs damaged tissues. Coconut oil is also a great remedy for treating various skin diseases, including psoriasis and eczema.

On the Other: Processed coconut oil can be harmful

A widely distributed type of coconut oil is RBD (refined, bleached and deodorized), which is sometimes hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated. In the November 26, 2001 issue of North Carolina Chiropractic Journal, Walter H. Schmitt Jr. stated, "By the definition of 'poison,' partially hydrogenated fats and oils are poisons." Dorland's Medical Dictionary defines "poison" as "any substance which, when relatively small amounts are ingested ... has chemical action that may cause damage to structure or disturbance of function, producing symptomatology, illness or death."

    Bottom Line

Virgin coconut oil is made from pure coconut meat, also known as non copra. During refining, high heating and chemicals are not used in the process. Virgin coconut oil has a long shelf life and is very stable.
