Hot steam vaporizers have long been used to treat colds, and steam does help loosen sinus and chest congestion. Some companies, such as Vicks, also make vaporizers to which cough-relieving medicine can be added, which the companies claim helps moisten irritated noses and throats, leading to temporary relief.

On the Other: Not Around Small Children

Vaporizers contain a heating element that brings the water inside to a fairly high temperature. This kills bacteria and provides steam, but it can also make the vaporizer and the steam quite hot. People with small children might decide vaporizers are not worth the chance of them burning themselves by touching or knocking over a hot vaporizer.

    Bottom Line

Vaporizers do seem to provide relief from colds and coughs. They are also, compared to humidifiers, inexpensive. However, they work by heating water to a high degree, so if you are living with someone, especially a child, who may hurt herself by touching or spilling a vaporizer, then the vaporizer may not be worth the worry and aggravation. Also consider the room you use it in, as the moisture from the steam can saturate books, furniture and the walls, so you'll need to air out the room to prevent mold growth.
