Medical billing is the process of reviewing and submitting medical claim forms to the insurance payer for reimbursement. Math skills are an important part of medical billing and are used for a variety of functions.
Reviewing Reimbursement
Medical billers must be able to review reimbursement assigned to medical codes and ensure that claim reimbursement is correct prior to submission. This may include performing billing calculations with addition, subtraction and multiplication.
Reviewing Insurance
A medical biller may use mathematical skills when calculating a patient's co-payments and deductibles for insurance verification and billing. A medical biller will often calculate the deductible percentage for the bill to inform the patient what he owes for the visit.
Managing Accounts Receivable
Medical billers often deal with accounts receivable, or the amount that is owed to the health care provider. This includes calculating and reconciling amounts paid with amounts owed, posting insurance payments and calculating past-due amounts for patient reminders.
Managing Medical Billing Issues
A medical biller may be responsible for assisting in resolving billing issues. This may mean using math to understand the reimbursement differences for claims denials.
Compiling Financial Reports
Many medical billers assist with compiling financial reports. This requires an understanding of calculations such as basic math skills and percentages in order to translate the numbers into financial charts and graphs.
