Ear infections in dogs can be caused by many reasons such as mites, bacterial infection, poor hygiene and allergies. If bacteria is the cause of the infection, you will most likely need to treat your dog with antibiotics. It is important to note that dogs should only take the antibiotics that are prescribed.
Amoxycillin
Dogs can take amoxycillin for ear infections. This antibiotic stops bacteria from multiplying. Brand names include Amoxil and Clavamox.
Cephalexin
Another safe antibiotic for ear infections is Cephalexin. Cephalexin also stops bacteria from reproducing. It comes in a liquid or gel form that can be added to the dog's water.
Neomycin
Neomycin comes in drops and is usually well tolerated. According to veterinarian Mike Richards, in very rare instances the medication can cause deafness and issues with balance.
Pills vs. Topical
If the ear infection is particularly severe, your veterinarian may also prescribe an oral antibiotic in addition to the drops.
Other Antibiotics
While some antibiotics are more helpful than others for ear infections, none will actually hurt your dog. That said, using antibiotics without the directions of a veterinarian may not properly heal the infection and can lead to the creation of drug-resistant strains.
