<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Plant in the Fall or Spring
According to the National Gardening Association, gardenia seeds should be planted in the spring or fall, in a spot with light shade. Ideal temperatures for gardenias are between 68 and 74 degrees F during the day and 60 degrees at night, reports the University of Rhode Island.
On the Other: Climate Is Everything
Gardenias are tropical plants and don't do well in very cold climates. If you live anywhere outside U.S. Department of Agriculture Zones 8 through 10, you will need to keep your gardenia as a houseplant, according to Learn2Grow. According to Thompson & Morgan seed company, seeds can be sowed indoors at any time of year---but only if the proper levels of heat, light and humidity are maintained.
Bottom Line
Gardenias are temperamental plants that require warm temperatures and high humidity to survive. Though they can only be grown outdoors in certain climates, gardenias can thrive indoors under the right conditions.
