Haemophilus influenzae type b, also known as Hib disease, often affects children under five years old. Hib disease was the leading cause of bacterial meningitis before the vaccine was available, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It was first introduced in 1985 and became part of the national recommended vaccine schedule in 1989, according to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. However, while the Hib was on a "recommended schedule," many schools began requiring the vaccine as an admissions criteria.
