One issue with iron gates is visibility onto your property. A burglar can look through an iron gate and scope out your home and yard. Burglars tend to look for easy targets, and if they can analyze your home they can spot easy points of access, note the lack of security system or presence of dogs, and even look for the pattern of a frequently open door or window.
On the Other: Climbing Iron Gates
Many iron gates have ornamental designs that serve two purposes: They are attractive and they are difficult to climb. Points, spires and sharp edges deter intruders from climbing over the gate, an advantage iron gates have over wood gates and structures.
Bottom Line
The reality is that no gate will be able to stop a determined burglar from entering any property--they are simply a deterrent. Iron gates have a strong an imposing appearance that may motivate a burglar to look for an easier target. Also, according to the Metropolitan Police Service of London, the visibility factor of an iron gate can be an advantage: Although burglars can see in, they can also be seen trespassing as the iron gate gives them less cover.
