Nexium is the brand name for the generic drug esomeprazole. These drugs, which are used to treat stomach acid disorders, are available by prescription only.
Uses
Nexium is most commonly prescribed to prevent the production of acid in the stomach, thus treating gastroesophageal reflux disease, commonly known by its acronym GERD.
GERD
GERD is a condition in which liquid and food move from the stomach back up through the esophagus, causing the organ irritation. The most common symptom of GERD is heartburn.
Significance
Because Nexium is used to prevent the production of stomach acid, it is also prescribed to treat ulcers. The drug can be used to prevent ulcers when the patient is taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen.
Esophagus
Again, because Nexium prevents the formation of acid in the stomach, it is prescribed when esophagus irritation is present because the irritation is most likely caused by GERD.
Warning
As with all prescription drugs, Nexium has side effects and your doctor should be notified if you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant, breast feeding, have liver disease or have an unusual reaction to the medication. Other medicines may interfere with Nexium, so be sure to talk to a health care professional about all the medication you are taking, whether they are natural, over-the-counter or prescribed.
