Pushups build strength by using body weight as resistance as the arms push the body away from the floor. The muscles actively used in pushups are located in the chest, back of the arms and shoulders. Also, muscles in the neck, abdomen, hips and legs work to stabilize the body during pushups.

On the Other: Modifications May Be Needed

While pushups target selected muscles of the upper body, there are people who cannot do a full pushup. They can modify the exercise by dropping their knees to the floor to decrease resistance. They can also place their hands on the edge of a sofa or low surface instead of on the floor.

    Bottom Line

The pushup is simple and especially effective for strengthening parts of the upper body. No special equipment is required. However, other strengthening exercises should be performed for other muscles, and regular aerobic activity should be included for full body workouts.
