  • Nexium is a drug used to treat symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease including heart burn and erosive esophagitis. It is also used to treat gastric ulcers associated with overuse of NSAIDs. There are risks associated with the drug.

    Side Effects

When taken as prescribed, Nexium may cause side effects including diarrhea, headaches, abdominal pain and nausea.

    Adverse Reactions

More serious reactions to Nexium, occurring in less than one percent of patients, according to RxList Inc., include enlargement of abdomen, leg edema, hypertension, ear ache, abnormal liver function and anemia.

    Interactions

Nexium increases the blood concentration level of the antiretroviral drug saquinavir. Nexium also reduces the absorption of certain drugs as a result of reducing gastric acid secretions, such as ketoconazole and atazanavir.

    Warnings

Patients that are overly sensitive to esomeprazole or substituted benzimidazoles, may experience angioedema or an anaphylactic reaction if they take Nexium.

    Considerations

Nursing mothers should take into account the potential of passing the active ingredient of Nexium, esomeprazole, to the breast milk.
