The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the human body. It is 3/4-inch thick and runs from the lower back near the spine down into the feet.
What it Does
The sciatic nerve enables movement and feeling in the lower back, hips, thighs, knees, ankles, feet and toes.
Sciatica
Sciatica is caused when the sciatic nerve is irritated by either inflammation of the surrounding muscles or by a herniated disc in the spine.
Treatments for Sciatica
Avoiding actions that cause pain as well as using anti-inflammatory medicines can improve pain caused by sciatica. Taking frequent walks as pain subsides will enhance recovery.
Tumors
In rare cases, sciatica can be caused by tumors. This would have to be diagnosed by a doctor because symptoms are similar to sciatica caused by inflammation. Patients will still experience pain, numbness and tingling as they would by sciatica caused by muscle and spine conditions.
Take Caution
It is important to treat spinal issues with the utmost care. If a patient experiences signs of sciatica or any other spinal- related issue, direct them to a medical professional immediately.
