Topamax is primarily prescribed to epileptics as an anti-seizure measure, though it is also sometimes used in migraine prevention. The drug has several known possible side effects.
Paresthesia
Paresthesias are episodes of sensation of prickling, tingling or numbness, as in the feeling of a body part "falling asleep." According to data summarized by RXList.com, they are one of the most commonly experienced Topamax side effects.
Weight Loss
While weight loss and associated problems such as anorexia are often mentioned in conjunction with children, they may be experienced by Topamax users of any age.
Fatigue
A "slowing down" effect is often described by patients taking the drug. In addition to fatigue, users may also experience slower reflexes, trouble concentrating, poor coordination and poor sense of recall.
Birth Defects
Topiramate, the key substance in Topamax, can pass into breast milk. The drug is not recommended for pregnant or nursing women.
Nausea
Nausea and dizziness consistently appear near the top of lists of common Topamax side effects.
Vision Problems
Topamax users of all ages have reported experiencing blurred or doubled vision while on the drug.
