Sinus congestion is the blockage of the sinus cavities that occurs with sinusitis. Congestion can result from a short-lived infection or a long term abnormality in the sinuses and nasal passages.
Infections
According to the Mayo Clinic, most sinusitis cases result from the common cold or other viruses. Sinus congestion may also occur with upper respiratory tract infections that are caused by bacteria.
Allergies
Seasonal allergies, or hay fever, can increase the production of mucus and result in sinus blockage.
Polyps or Tumors
Tissue growths in the nasal passages or sinuses such as nasal polyps or tumors can cause long-term sinus congestion.
Deviated Septum
The septum, or wall that separates the nostrils, can become crooked and restrict air flow through the nasal passages and sinuses.
Other Causes
Tooth infections and adenoid infections can lead to the development of sinusitis. Immune system disorders, gastrointestinal reflux disorder and other medical conditions can cause sinus congestion.
