  • Refilling your own printer cartridges is an economical and environmentally conscious way of using technology. At a fraction of the cost of a new ink cartridge, you can refill an empty one twice. And after a few times doing it yourself, it will take less time and you'll spill less ink. All you need is an empty HP ink cartridge, a refill kit, wet and dry paper towels and latex gloves.

    Refilling an HP ink cartridge

Because refilling an ink cartridge can be messy, especially if you haven't done it before, lay out a thick layer of paper towels where you'll be working. Also, keep a couple of wet and dry paper towels on hand. In case of a spill, blot the ink up with a dry paper towel and get the rest with a wet one. If you blot it up when it's still wet, you have a better chance of leaving no permanent marks. Wearing the latex gloves, pry the top of the empty cartridge off, situated over the paper towels. If you have trouble getting the top off, use a butter knife as a lever for prying. Take the syringe from the refill kit and fill with between 3 and 5 ml of ink. Insert the syringe into the cartridge all the way to the bottom of the sponge. Slowly squeeze the syringe until the entire sponge is full, but be careful not to overfill. Remove the syringe and wipe the surface of the cartridge clean. The cartridge may have a few sponge chambers; repeat this procedure for each one. For multiple colors, insert a long needle into the cartridge chamber to verify the color, fill the syringe with the correct color and repeat the steps. When all chambers in the cartridge are full, snap the top back on and wipe it down with paper towels. Allow the cartridge to sit overnight in case of any leaks.
