Sweet oil is generally the same as olive oil used in cooking. It is usually sold over-the-counter as an ear emollient, or moisturizer, to help soothe earaches. Sweet oil may be used as a topical ointment for skin and hair and may also be used to help treat illnesses.
Medicinal Value
Aside from kitchen use as a cooking oil, sweet or olive oil has long been revered for its numerous medicinal and home uses. Ingested, it can help ease the effects of corrosive poisons and may be used as a mild laxative.
Moisturizer/Conditioner
Applied to dry skin, sweet oil helps the body to "lock in" or retain moisture. It may be used as a hot-oil remedy to treat dry or brittle hair. In the home, sweet oil acts as a natural furniture polish that helps condition and preserve wood.
Origin
Sweet or olive oil is also known as oleum olivae. It is an oil derived from the fruit of the olea europaea linne, or olive tree.
Home Use
Keeping sweet oil around the home can be beneficial. Many individuals, particularly parents of young children, report advantages of using sweet oil to treat conditions that might otherwise require medical attention.
Warning
Applying sweet oil to the ear, especially with children, may be messy and cause staining. Sweet oil should not be used in the ear canal if holes are in the eardrum, as this can cause further infection.
