Nexium is the brand name of esomeprazole magnesium manufactured by AstraZeneca. It is a prescription medicine that is related to Prilosec, which is also made by AstraZeneca.
Acid Reflux
One of the primary uses of Nexium is to treat heartburn and gastroesophageal reflux disease, also known as GERD. These are caused by the stomach acids backing up into the esophagus.
Erosive Esophagitis
Doctors may also prescribe Nexium to treat damage to the esophagus caused by stomach acid. Erosive esophagitis may take four to eight weeks to fully heal.
Ulcers
Nexium is prescribed with certain antibiotics including amoxicillin and clarithromycin to treat the infection that is the cause of many duodenal ulcers. These ulcers occur just past the exit of the stomach in the duodenum.
How It Works
Nexium works by turning off some of the pumps that produce acid in your stomach. There is still enough acid produced so you can properly digest your food and get its full nutrient value, but there won't be enough to cause heartburn or acid reflux.
Dosing and Side Effects
Nexium should be taken once per day an hour before a meal. Taking Nexium may lead to side effects which can include diarrhea, abdominal pain and headache.
