  • A GED--or General Educational Development--certificate, which is equal to a high school diploma, is available to those who have not completed their high school education. If you have a diploma that is not recognized in your state, you can also take the GED test and obtain the certificate. Not only is this certificate an important document when you are looking for work, but studying for and passing the test can help prepare people for the challenges of everyday life.

In New York state, after taking the GED test, there is a two- to six-week wait for the results. The period varies in other states depending on the size of the state and the demand for the test. Once the scores are processed, you will be mailed either a copy of your passing scores and an Equivalency Diploma, a copy of your failing scores or a letter of ineligibility. Reasons for ineligibility in New York state include being under 16 on the day of the test, taking a retest less than 60 days from the date of your last test and taking the test more than three times in a 12-month period. You can also call the GED Hotline in your state for the results after they have been released.
