Pool gate requirements can vary depending on the city, county or state. However, depending on the laws in your area, you may not be required to install and maintain a fence around your pool. In most cases where a fence is required, if gates are also required then they must be locked in order for them to be effective.
On the Other: Safety Features
Even if the law governing your city, county or state does not require the installation and enforcement of pool gate locks, surrounding your pool with them can help prevent a wide variety of pool accidents. Even if the victims of the accident are not your responsibility, if you don't have locks on your pool gates, you may be held legally responsible depending on the laws in your jurisdiction.
Bottom Line
Even if your area is not governed by laws requirement the locking of pool gates, the cost of a lock--or installation of a gate, for that matter--is a minimal investment when weighed against the possible legal ramifications if an accident occurs there.
