Home security is a complex issue that involves a planning session with a security professional. System components depend on the architectural design of the home, the contents of the residence and the personal needs of the homeowners.

Basic Security

The most basic forms of home security include door deadbolts, sturdy doors, window locks and the use of garage door openers with security locks. Criminologists report that these simple measures are responsible for a major reduction in home burglaries.

Wired Alarm Systems

A wired security system sends a signal to a main control panel in the home, usually in a closet or behind a door, when the components are triggered. Components include door and window contacts, motion sensors, panic buttons and driveway sensors.

Wireless Alarm Systems

Wireless alarm systems use the same sensors as wired systems but the signal is sent remotely, saving the expense of installing wired connections. These systems are available from commercial security companies or for homeowner installation.

Security Cameras

Installation of security cameras include a live stream and recorded images using various types of video and digital cameras. Cameras are available for interior and exterior observation.

Handheld Alarms

Home safety systems may incorporate handheld emergency devices to call for help without moving to a stationary keypad. These systems may be incorporated into personal cell phones.

Private Security Officers

Private security officers in patrol cars, usually linked with commercial alarm companies, provide additional home security. In 2008, a National Public Radio report cited a sharp decline in home robberies in neighborhoods employing private patrols.
