  • Facial hair loss can have many causes. Hair loss may be patchy or it may spread across the face. It may be associated with a rash, and it may come on gradually or suddenly. All these factors are important in considering the possible cause of facial hair loss.

    Skin Conditions

If the facial hair loss is associated with a rash, the most likely cause is some sort of skin condition, such as eczema, psoriasis or seborrheic dermatitis.

    Autoimmune Diseases

By far the most common cause of patchy hair loss, on the face or elsewhere, is a condition known as alopecia areata, an autoimmune disorder.

    Infections

Facial hair loss can also be triggered by infections. Tinea capitis is the official name for a type of fungal skin infection that can cause patchy hair loss.

    Hormonal Imbalances

Facial hair loss may also be a sign of an underlying hormonal imbalance. In this case, the hair loss will usually be diffuse rather than patchy.

    Other Causes

A deficiency in iron, Vitamin C, Vitamin B12 or copper can also cause diffuse hair loss, including facial hair loss.
