<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Men's Rogaine Is Often Recommended
While Women's Rogaine--which contains 2% minoxidil, the ingredient that's been proven to regrow hair--is usually prescribed, a stronger solution is often recommended for women. According to the American Hair Loss Association (AHLA), many dermatologists believe that Men's Rogaine, which contains 5% minoxidil, is more effective in regrowing hair for women. The 5% solution has not been approved by the FDA for use by women, but some small clinical trials suggest that Men's Rogaine may be more effective than Women's Rogaine.
On the Other: Side Effects Are Possible
The most common side effect that women experience while using Men's Rogaine is an increase in facial hair, usually above the upper lip, on the chin or along the jaw line (some women report experiencing this side effect even after treatment ends). This can be controlled by plucking or using other hair-removal products.
Bottom Line
Women should consult a dermatologist before using Men's Rogaine. If application of the 5% formula is recommended, the dermatologist will be able to supervise its use so that any side effects can be mitigated or prevented.
