Table sugar and high-fructose corn syrup share many of the same chemical properties. Michael F. Jacobson, PhD, executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, claims that table sugar and high-fructose corn syrup break down in the body the same way, and there is no evidence that corn syrup is worse for the body than table sugar. Also, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found no conclusive evidence that high-fructose corn syrup directly contributed to obesity.

On the Other: Potential Negative Health Effects

Many products with high-fructose corn syrup, including chocolate syrup, soda and brownies, have large amounts of calories and little nutritional value, so overeating could result in obesity and diabetes. Environmental Health published a study that found traces of mercury, a toxic poison, in a third of products with large amounts of high-fructose corn syrup.

    Bottom Line

Eating moderate or small amounts of food containing high-fructose corn syrup will most likely not result in a health risk, as long as proper diet and nutrition is practiced.
