The pink ribbon campaign was started by the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Its history dates back to June 1990, during the Komen Foundation's Race for the Cure, when some participants wore pink ribbons in support. The next year, the Komen Foundation distributed pink ribbons to each participant for the New York City Race for the Cure.
