Breast calcifications---deposits of calcium found within the breast---are located in your breast tissue. Usually, breast calcifications are so small that you can barely feel them. On mammograms, they may appear as white spots.
Considerations
Although common in all women, according to the Mayo Clinic, breast calcifications are more prevalent in post-menopausal women.
Significance
Breast calcifications are typically benign, or noncancerous, yet some may indicate breast cancer according to their shape. For instance, if their pattern's irregular shaped in tight clusters, it may be breast cancer.
Types
Your doctor may classify the calcium deposits in your breast in one of three categories: benign, probably benign and suspicious.
Results
According to the California Pacific Medical Center, 98 percent of probably benign calcifications are noncancerous, while one in approximately five suspicious calcifications is early stage breast cancer.
Misconceptions
Calcium deposits in your breast has nothing to do with you daily calcium intake, according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.
