The dangers of high LDL cholesterol are commonly explained and health care professionals typically focus on finding ways to lower dangerous levels of LDL cholesterol. However, it may also be dangerous to lower your LDL cholesterol too much.
Identification
Low-density lipoproteins (LDL) are considered the "bad" type of cholesterol, according to the American Heart Association. Although doctors recommend maintaining a low level of cholesterol to reduce the risk of heart disease, excessively low levels may also be harmful.
Cancer
In an extensive study, researchers at Tufts University School of Medicine found that low levels of LDL cholesterol were associated with an increased risk of developing cancer. The cancers were of no specific type or location.
Premature Birth
In pregnant women, low LDL cholesterol is also related to premature births. A study published in Pediatrics magazine found that mothers with low cholesterol were more likely to have a preterm delivery and a baby with a lower birth weight.
Depression & Anxiety
A study done at Duke University Medical Center found that low levels of cholesterol are correlated with a greater risk for developing depression and anxiety. The low cholesterol levels reduce the level of serotonin produced in the brain, which regulates a person's mood.
Considerations
Keep in mind that ideal cholesterol levels vary with each person. Speak with a health care professional to determine a cholesterol range most appropriate for your age, diet, health history and lifestyle.
