The SATA interface for hard drives is increasing the speed of data transfers to handle large media files. SATA 3.0 allows for transfer rates up to 600 Megabytes per second.

On the Other: Any SATA Drive Is Faster Than an IDE Drive

IDE drives topped out at 133 Megabytes per second. SATA 1.0 drives had a transfer rate of 150 Megabytes per second and SATA 2.0 drives doubled that to 300 Megabytes per second.

    Bottom Line

Get either an SATA 2.0 or 3.0 drive for best performance. The drives are reverse-compatible so a SATA 3.0 drive will work with a SATA 2.0 controller, and you can upgrade controllers later without having to get another new drive.
