A standard hemostat is a tool used in surgery and in most medical offices to help control the flow of blood. A hemostat resembles a pair of scissors, as it belongs to a group of instruments that pivot.
Appearance
A hemostat has handles that are held at the top that can also be locked into place by several interlocking teeth.
Function
The hemostat is designed to control the flow of blood during a procedure. The clamp at the end of the tool is the mechanism that helps clot a blood vessel.
History
Instruments similar to the standard hemostat have been used since around 1,500 B.C., and Ambroise Paré created the predecessor to the modern hemostat in the 15th century.
Types
There are many types of hemostats, all of which are used for a variety of procedures. They are available in numerous sizes and shapes.
Importance
Without the creation of the hemostat there would have been many unnecessary deaths caused by excessive bleeding. Consequently, the hemostat has become invaluable during surgeries.
