  • <h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Transmission Fluid Can Damage Your Engine

Though transmission fluid contains detergents that can be helpful in cleaning your engine, it isn't designed to lubricate the way motor oil is. Therefore, adding it to the engine might cause moving parts to wear faster than they normally would. Cleaning with transmission fluid can also cause damage if it makes large pieces of buildup to break loose and lodge in the fuel injectors or other intakes.

On the Other: Some People Swear By It

Replacing a quart of engine oil with a quart of transmission fluid, running the car for a few hundred miles and then draining the crankcase and refilling it with 100 percent motor oil is an old trick that many practical mechanics have used for decades. By most accounts, it works just fine.

    Bottom Line

Using transmission fluid to clean your engine probably won't hurt anything. However, to be on the safe side, you should use a commercial motor flush product instead. It's not much more expensive than using transmission fluid anyway.
