  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition where the muscle on the lower end of the esophagus cannot close itself and provide a seal from the upper opening of the stomach. This can cause food and drink to be pushed back into the esophagus via the reflux method. The major symptom is heartburn but luckily, there are many healthy foods that can soothe symptoms of GERD.

    Carbohydrates

    Foods that are rich with complex carbohydrates and fiber are acceptable to those with GERD. They aid in the digestive process and help absorb stomach acid. Complex carbs also contribute to a satiated feeling so you are less likely to overeat which exacerbates GERD symptoms. Some of the best sources of complex carbs and fiber include kidney beans, lentils, whole grain breads, rye, oatmeal and wheat germ.

    Apples

    Apples and any products containing apples such as apple sauce, apple juice and apple cider vinegar help to combat GERD. Apples help to neutralize acid in the stomach which provide immediate relief for acid reflux.

    Dairy

    Many dairy foods are high in fat and high fat foods should be kept to a minimum for those with acid reflux. However, low fat dairy products are allowed to be consumed on a GERD diet. Foods such as skim milk, fat free sour cream, low fat yogurt, feta cheese and fat free cream cheese can be eaten. Soy based products like soy cheese, nuts and milk are also acceptable.

    Protein

    Protein is essential in any diet but the type of protein is crucial for those with GERD. Chicken, pork and fish are excellent sources as long as they are baked or broiled. Do not eat them fried as this can irritate the stomach lining. High fat proteins can trigger acid reflux and should be avoided.

    Portions

    The size of your food portions is almost as important as the food itself. You want to split up large meals into at least five or six small meals everyday. If you overload your stomach with too much food or drink, the likelihood of a GERD attack increases. By splitting meals, you stay fuller longer and do not place as much pressure on your digestive system.
