The anxiety management theory suggests that feelings of anxiety and uncertainty can learn to be managed with the use of effective communication methods.
Development
Based on research by Dr. William B. Gudykunst between 1978 and 1988, Gudykunst attempted to parallel anxiety problems with ineffective communication and uncertainty.
Considerations
Focusing on four levels of communication, the theory revolves around looking at how people communicate in groups, with other individuals, in different cultural settings and with themselves.
Causes
Proposing that anxiety is caused by reactions to people and situations that are not necessarily appropriate is a cornerstone of the anxiety management.
Management
According to the theory, if you can learn to manage feelings of anxiety and uncertainty when interacting with people you can overcome your anxiety issues. It also stresses building tolerances to unpredictability.
Recovery
Reacting to people and events in the moment rather than dwelling on things you can not control or predict is a sign, says the theory, that you are on the road to recovering from your anxiety issues.
