Warts are caused by a viral infection. They can occur nearly anywhere on the body. Although warts are rarely dangerous, they can be disfiguring.
Types
There are several types of warts, including common warts (occurring mostly on the hands), flat warts (found on the face), genital warts, plantar warts (occurring on the soles of the feet), and subungual and periungual warts (found around the fingernails or toenails).
Flat Warts
Flat warts are most common in children. Flat warts can appear light brown, pink, or yellow, have flat tops, and often exist in clusters. Flat warts usually occur on faces, but can also appear on arms, knees, or hands.
Causes
Warts are caused by a human papillomavirus. You can get this virus by touching someone who is infected or contacting something they have touched, such as a towel.
Treatment
There are many treatments for warts, including over-the-counter creams, cryotherapy, electrocautery, and laser treatment. Ask a doctor how to treat warts on your face.
Warning
See your doctor if your warts appear infected, if you have diabetes or immune suppression, or if you wish to have warts removed.
Prevention
Avoid touching warts on other people, and wash your hands after filing or touching your warts.
