Minor children claimed as dependents must file federal taxes if their unearned income (taxable interest, dividends, etc.) exceeded $950, their earned income (wages, tips) exceeded $5,400 or the two together exceeded $5,700. If self-employed (mowing lawns, for example), they must file if their income exceeded $400. Check with your state to find state tax income limits.
