While working as a researcher at the Department of Anatomy at Cornell Medical School in New York, Dr. George Papanicolaou performed the first Pap smears on guinea pigs with a small ear speculum. In 1933 he turned his attention to detecting cervical cancer in human females. The Pap test was named for him.
