Hewlett Packard printers can cost you a lot of money---not just in the initial outlay for the printer itself, but in replacing the ink cartridges when they run out. It is possible, however, to refill and reuse old cartridges. A number of vendors and people can perform this task.

Refill Stores

A number of stores across the country, like Cartridge World, specialize in refilling HP and other ink cartridges. These same stores will also sell recycled and refurbished cartridges.

Drugstores

Many drugstores and similar shops will take ink cartridges and refill them for a price. The refill station is usually located in the same place where you would take pictures to get developed.

Electronic Stores

Many electronic stores, or stores with an electronics department, have drop-off stations to refill ink cartridges. Check the area in your local store that sells computers and printers to see if it has a refill station.

Home Refill

It's also very easy to refill your HP ink cartridges yourself. Any of the above stores may also sell home refill kits designed to fill Hewlett Packard and other brands of cartridges with fresh ink.

Refilling Procedure

The exact refill process varies for each individual brand of cartridge, but it usually involves making a hole in the cartridge to the ink chamber and injecting the ink into the chamber with a syringe bottle. The refill kit should come with an instruction book; find the specific instructions in the book for your cartridge.
