Though "active duty" is a term that applies to military duty, Department of Defense (DoD) civilians often relocate to assist the U.S. military at its global outposts. DoD civilians receive foreign assignments that last between 6 and 12 months. In 2010, many assignments are on staffs in Joint Task Force Headquarters in Afghanistan, Iraq, and other locations around the globe.
