  • Wireless keyboards offer great flexibility and make a desktop less cluttered with more wires and connections. Using a wireless keyboard with an Apple Macintosh computer is not complicated but does involve making some adaptations. The Macintosh ships with a standard USB keyboard but you can also purchase Apple's wireless keyboard or use any brand of USB-capable peripherals.

    USB Wireless Adapter

Apple uses Bluetooth wireless technology to connect to wireless keyboards so nothing involved with this process involves the AirPort card or any wireless Internet connection. Before you can use a wireless keyboard, you have to purchase a USB Bluetooth wireless adapter. This is a small device about the size of a stick drive or a small package of chewing gum. Just plug it into either a USB jack on the Macintosh or any USB connected peripheral. Buying a USB hub can make connecting peripheral a lot easier: plug it into the Mac and then connect up to six peripherals into the hub, including the wireless USB adapter.

    Install drivers

Once the USB adapter is connected, install all the necessary drivers for the keyboard. Just insert the CD into the drive and follow the commands. Your USB wireless keyboard is almost ready to use.

    Find Keyboard

For your wireless keyboard to work with the Macintosh, the computer must "find" the keyboard on the wireless connection. Make sure first the keyboard is on. There will be a small switch on the back to turn on the keyboard. The keyboard will then transmit it's Bluetooth signal. Whether it's an Apple wireless keyboard or another brand makes no difference. Use the Bluetooth connection in the Apple menu--under the Bluetooth logo in the Finder window. Pull down to "Select Bluetooth Device" and wait for the computer to scan the Bluetooth network. Then select "Keyboard." When the keyboard appears you are connected.

    Batteries

Don't forget that wireless keyboards of all types transmit a certain frequency. To do this they need a portable power supply: batteries. Always makes sure the keyboard has fresh batteries to stay connected to the wireless USB hub. Also, the keyboard transmits at a rather low frequency so don't move too far from the computer. Ten feet is about the maximum distance. Also, try to keep the computer in sight. A wall or piece of furniture between you and the computer could interrupt the connection.
