  • Candida albicans is one of dozens of types of yeast and bacteria that live in your digestive tract. These microorganisms assist with digestion, but when they become overgrown or get out of balance, many health conditions can arise. There are several remedies to help you kill of excess Candida. You will probably need to make some lifestyle changes to keep your gut in balance after treatment.

    Diet

According to YeastConnection.com, which carries on the pioneering work of William Crook MD, you need to adopt a diet that is gut friendly. Choose foods that will work with your digestive system rather than against it. Avoid processed foods that have chemical additives. White sugar, white flour and pasta should be limited or eliminated completely. These provide very little nutritive value, and the process of digesting them can cause spikes in your blood sugar levels that can bring about inappropriate insulin responses. Health issues like diabetes and "bad" cholesterol can be associated with this type of insulin response, according to the National Institute for Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases. On a yeast-killing protocol, you will have severely limited your food choices. You will add back some of the foods to see how well you tolerate them. In other words, you can eat foods that do not seem to bring on symptoms of yeast overgrowth. Gradually increase your vegetable and fruit intake to a total of about 75 percent of your diet. Eat fruit on an empty stomach, and wait at least 20 minutes before eating anything else. Fruit will ferment in the intestine if not allowed to move on through unchecked by other, harder to digest foods. This fermentation can cause gas, and incomplete digestion of the other foods. If you find that raw vegetables cause bloating and pain, eat them steamed or lightly cooked instead. This will make them easier to digest. Lean meats, dairy, legumes and whole grains like oats, barley and wild rice should round out your diet. Make sure you drink at least two quarts of filtered or distilled water daily. Drink unsweetened green, black and herbal teas.

    Supplements

Besides a good multivitamin and mineral, begin using a probiotic supplement. Some yogurt brands advertise that they contain all the live cultures you need for digestive health. Check the labels for lactobacillus acidolphilus and bifidobacterium bifidum. Many good supplements are available with these and other probiotics. YeastConnection.com recommends your supplement should be able to "deliver at least one billion live organisms to the intestines." They populate your digestive tract and assist in breaking down the food you eat, as well as help fight foreign invaders like viruses. Garlic is a good supplement for several health reasons, including helping to keep Candida in check on a regular basis. Periodically you may want to take a course of Caprylic acid if you experience symptoms that your yeast count is getting out of control again.
