  • The Magic Chef Company got its start in the early 1900s by manufacturing gas ranges. While the company has evolved over time, it continues to produce a good quality, mid-range product. When problems occur with a Magic Chef gas range, good troubleshooting skills can help determine whether to attempt the repair yourself or call a service agent. The most common problems involve gas supply and ignition issues.

    Safety Considerations

Before attempting to troubleshoot or repair your Magic Chef gas range, unplug it and turn the gas supply valve counterclockwise to turn the gas off. While you should double-check the gas shutoff valve to ensure it is off, if at any time you smell gas, get out of the house, turn off the main gas valve and report the problem to the gas company or fire department. Do not go back into your home until you receive an all-clear.

    Burner Assembly

Keeping the burner and surrounding area clean can prevent most problems associated with the burner assembly. If spills or food particles block the gas ports and prevent ignition, remove the burner, soak it in a solution of water and mild detergent, such as dish soap, then clean with a soft cloth, rinse and dry thoroughly. Use a pin or needle to clear the gas ports. Replace the burner and test.

    Pilot Light

Because problems with the pilot light can be a symptom of more serious problems with the gas supply, consult a professional immediately if home repair attempts fail. If one or more range burners will not light, or if the oven will not heat, check the pilot light to see if it is off. Access the pilot light for a Magic Chef gas range from the back. Relight the pilot and then adjust, turning the adjustment screw on the main gas line, until it you see a round flame, approximately a half-inch high, with a blue tip. Also try adjusting the pilot light if it continually goes out or if the oven is not hot enough.

    Burner Flame

Most problems with the burner flame can trace back to the air shutter--the valve that assists in mixing air with gas to produce a flame. Some Magic Chef gas range models have a sealed-burner system that will not allow you to access under the range-top controls. If you own a sealed-burner range, call a professional to adjust the air shutter. For other models, locate the air shutter valve by removing burner grates, then lifting the top of the range up until the two support arms snap into place. Each burner has an air shutter valve attached to the tube that feeds gas to the burner. It's just inside the range top, behind the control knobs. First, check to see if grease or debris is plugging valve connections. Remove any visible food particles and then wipe it with a warm rag. If the burner flame is too small or is a yellow-orange color, loosen the setscrew securing the air shutter and adjust the shutter to enlarge the opening. If the flame is too large, adjust the shutter to decrease the opening. Replace the range and test before tightening the setscrew.

    Oven Thermostat

If the oven is not heating to the correct temperature, first test to see how far off it is and then try recalibrating if the difference is 25 degrees or more. Set the oven to 350 degrees and place an oven thermometer on the center rack for approximately 20 minutes. To recalibrate, pull off the oven-temperature control knob and loosen the two screws securing a round plate with notch settings. Use a screwdriver to turn the plate up one notch to raise the oven temperature approximately 25 degrees and down one notch to lower the oven temperature approximately 25 degrees.
